Understanding why this funding could help you
A take-away form Steven Topliss, BNZ’s Head of Market Economics predictions is that the “dead cat bounce” may not be happening in New Zealand, but a slow and long recovery could be on the cards for many businesses to get back to “normal”.
Obviously, a lot depends on our trading partners, including the ability to reduce the impact of Covid-19 via medical advancements.
A “dead cat bounce” is a temporary recovery from a decline. The first bounce may appear to be a reversal of the trend, but it is quickly followed by a continuation of the downward move. A slow recovery means it may take years for you to get back to the trajectory you were once on.
Are you sure you have bounced back to “normal”?
Say you were making $100,000 a month before the pandemic.
Then, when COVID hit, your revenue dropped by 50% – in this instance that is down to $50,000 a month.
Over the months that followed, you have grown your revenue again by 50%. So, you are back to normal right? Wrong.
You have grown 50% on $50,000, which means you are now making $75,000 a month. A $25,000 shortfall on “normal”.
Over 12 months, this $25,000 quickly turns into $300,000.
The effects Covid-19 will have on business will be felt for some time yet. We know we will face uncertainty reduced discretionary spend, higher unemployment, and risk-averse purchasing behaviours.
However, there will also be opportunities as competitors change, new consumer needs surface, and joint ventures created. Cash flow and careful planning are central to any business, and for many of us, this has never been truer than in 2020.
